Mini gastric bypass achieves the benefits of gastric bypass with less risks.
Gastric bypass weight loss surgery has been used to achieve successful weight loss for over 50 years. In addition to weight loss, gastric bypass has been used to cure diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure and sleep apnoea.
Over the last 20 years, Dr Kevin Dolan has performed over 2000 gastric bypasses, and has established a reputation of helping patients lead healthier lives. Dr Kevin Dolan has modified the technique of gastric bypass to make the operation safer but still maintain the health benefits and weight loss associated with the original gastric bypass. His use of the Mini Gastric Bypass technique enables him to do just this. This technique involves bypassing a part of the small intestine to result in less eating and less calorie absorption.
Kevin does this by decreasing the number of anastomoses (joins between stomach and intestine) thereby decreasing the risks of a leak or bleeding from the staple lines, and also decreases the risks of internal hernias.
What is a mini gastric bypass?
A mini gastric bypass is a simplified version of a traditional gastric bypass, but still offers the same long term benefits to the patient. It uses a combination of restrictive and malabsorptive techniques to create a small stomach pouch, similar to a gastric sleeve. A loop of the small intestine is brought up and attached to the pouch which has been created, so that a large portion of the intestine (approximately 200cm) is bypassed.
This results in a smaller stomach in which only 25% of all food eaten is absorbed. This alters the hormones which are involved in appetite control. The operation particularly aims to eradicate diabetes in both insulin and non-insulin dependent patients.
The difference between mini gastric bypass surgery and gastric bypass
Whilst seeming very similar in nature based on their names, there is indeed a difference between the two procedures.
The mini gastric bypass is a procedure which offers the safest surgery for a multitude of reasons. The main reason behind this is the fact that it has less joins than a regular gastric bypass, so there is a smaller chance of a leak or an internal hernia as a consequence of the surgery occurring. It is also able to provide rapid weight loss and control type 2 diabetes before weight loss takes place. If you are morbidly obese, the roux-en-y gastric bypass may be a suitable treatment, though in many cases the mini gastric bypass will still create the desired results in a less invasive manner.
The mini gastric bypass procedure
Dr Kevin Dolan will run a series of tests on you to ensure that you are ready for surgery, and they will need to follow a diet plan which has been set out for them by their surgeon and dietitian. Thankfully, it is a laparoscopic surgery and as a result only minimal scarring will occur.
For more information on what to expect from the surgery, it is best to contact an experienced bariatric surgeon who will be able to give you an informed opinion and inform you on what exactly you should expect.
