GLP-1 Medications

GLP-1 Medications Before Bariatric Surgery: What You Should Know

Home / News & Articles / GLP-1 Medications Before Bariatric Surgery: What You Should Know

With the rise of weight-loss medications like Ozempic, Wegovy, and Saxenda, many people struggling with obesity turn to these drugs as a first step before considering bariatric surgery. But how effective are they for long-term weight loss? And why do so many patients eventually opt for surgery?

A recent study found that over 60% of bariatric surgery candidates had previously used GLP-1 medications—but most of them stopped due to limited weight loss or unpleasant side effects. Let’s break down what this means for you if you’ve tried these medications and are now considering surgery.

Why Do People Use GLP-1 Drugs Before Surgery?

GLP-1 medications (like Ozempic, Wegovy, and Saxenda) work by reducing appetite and slowing digestion, helping patients lose weight without surgery. They’re often prescribed for:
✔️ People looking to avoid or delay surgery.
✔️ Those with type 2 diabetes or high BMI needing a pre-surgery weight-loss boost.
✔️ Patients with insurance or medical requirements to attempt non-surgical weight loss first.

However, the reality is that many people don’t achieve the weight loss they need with medication alone—leading them to explore bariatric surgery as a more effective, long-term solution.

Study Findings: What Happens When Patients Use GLP-1s Before Surgery?

📌 Key Stats from the Study:

✔️ 63% of bariatric surgery candidates had previously used GLP-1 medications.
✔️ The most common drugs were Semaglutide (Ozempic, Wegovy) and Liraglutide (Saxenda).
✔️ On average, patients lost only about 5.3 kg (11.7 lbs) before stopping the medication.
✔️ 95% of patients discontinued GLP-1s—mainly due to:

  • Insufficient weight loss (not enough to reach their goals).
  • Side effects (57% reported nausea, vomiting, or stomach pain).

For those who stuck with the medication for at least 6 weeks, weight loss was slightly better. Patients who reached the highest recommended dose also lost more weight than those who didn’t. But for most, the results weren’t enough—leading them to move forward with surgery.

What This Means for You

If you’ve used Ozempic, Wegovy, or Saxenda but didn’t get the results you hoped for, you’re not alone. This study shows that while GLP-1 drugs can help some people lose weight, they often aren’t enough for those struggling with severe obesity.

If you’re in this situation, it’s worth considering bariatric surgery as the next step. Surgery can provide:
✔️ More significant and sustained weight loss (typically 60–80% of excess weight).
✔️ Long-term improvement or resolution of conditions like diabetes and high blood pressure.
✔️ A one-time procedure, rather than relying on medication indefinitely.

Is Surgery the Right Next Step for You?

If you’ve already tried GLP-1 medications and struggled with weight loss or side effects, bariatric surgery could be the long-term solution you’ve been looking for.

At WALOS, Dr. Kevin Dolan and our team are here to help you make the best decision for your health—whether that’s surgery or another approach. Let’s find the right path for you!

Final Thoughts

  • GLP-1 medications like Ozempic and Saxenda help some people lose weight but don’t always provide lasting results.
  • Many bariatric surgery patients tried these medications first but stopped due to side effects or limited success.
  • If you’re struggling to lose weight despite trying medication, bariatric surgery could be your next step toward long-term health and weight loss.
