If you have gained weight after a previous bariatric surgery, you might consider revisional surgery.
In most cases, weight loss surgery achieves very good results and many people who undergo a bariatric procedure are able to reach and maintain a healthy and stable body weight in the long run. Some patients, however, may need to have a revision surgery. If you have been through weight loss surgery in the past and have regained a considerable amount of weight, you may be a suitable candidate for a secondary procedure. Read on to find out more about what the process involves…
What does the surgery involve?
If you choose to undergo revisionary surgery, there are a number of options available. These include:
Sleeve gastrectomy
Sleeve gastrectomy, also known as gastric sleeve surgery, involves the removal of three quarters of the bottom part of the stomach. Once this part of the stomach has been removed, the amount of food that can be consumed is restricted. The procedure also reduces the amount of hunger hormone (known as ghrelin) that is produced by the stomach. There are a number of advantages to choosing gastric sleeve surgery, but Dr Dolan will let you know if it is a good option for you, depending on your situation. The surgery is performed laparoscopically, rather than as open surgery, which means that it is minimally invasive and recovery tends to be much quicker than with other techniques. Mini gastric bypass
Mini gastric bypass surgery is a simplified form of standard gastric bypass surgery and uses a combination of restrictive and malabsorptive techniques to reduce the size of the stomach. The procedure is often recommended for patients with diabetes as it helps to eradicate the condition in both insulin and non-insulin dependent patients. The procedure is also helpful for individuals who have high cholesterol, high blood pressure and polycystic ovarian syndrome. SADI-S
Single Anastomosis Duodeno-Illeal Bypass with Sleeve Gastrectomy (SADI-S) is a procedure that combines sleeve gastrectomy and a small bowel bypass. Three quarters of the stomach is removed by means of sleeve gastrectomy, which limits the amount of food that can be eaten. During intestinal bypass, the top part of the small bowel is divided just beyond the outlet of the stomach and the lower part of the small bowel is attached. This causes food to bypass part of the small intestine and reduces the amount of fat, sugar and calories that are absorbed by the body.
