A major new study has shown that people who have weight loss surgery lose five times more weight than those who use weekly injections.
Researchers in the U.S. looked at patients who had a sleeve gastrectomy or gastric bypass and compared them to people using injectable weight loss medications. After two years, surgery patients had lost an average of 24% of their body weight—around 58 kilograms—while those on injections lost only 4.7% (about 12 kilograms). Even patients who stayed on the injections for a full year lost just 7%.
This study matches what many doctors, including myself, see every day: while injections can help, surgery often delivers far better and longer-lasting results—especially for people with obesity-related health problems.
“In the real world, we see a lot of patients stop injections within the first year,” said Dr Avery Brown, who led the study. “That means they may not get the results they were hoping for.”
Real Results from Perth’s Leading Bariatric Surgeon
I’ve been helping people lose weight through surgery for over 20 years. As the Director of Western Australia Laparoscopic and Obesity Surgery, I’ve performed more than 15,500 procedures with a complication rate of less than 0.1%.
On average, my patients lose 43.5 kilograms, and 69.3% of their excess weight. These results don’t come from surgery alone—they come from having the right support before and after the operation.
