WALOS offer long-term follow up in a multidisciplinary team setting for all patients undergoing bariatric surgery.
An internal clinic survey has reported over 80% of WALOS gastric band and sleeve gastrectomy patients are happy with their weight loss. WALOS patients who follow the aftercare plan will continue to enjoy a successful weight loss journey.
However, more recently we have seen a number of patients who have had a band or sleeve gastrectomy from other practices that do not offer long-term follow up in a multidisciplinary team setting. Some of these patients have also received a sleeve gastrectomy using a bougie that is too large (WALOS uses a 34Fr bougie) unfortunately these patients have regained weight and require further revisional surgery. In these cases, gastric bypass surgery is Dr Dolan’s preferred procedure as it combines restriction and malabsorption, thereby tackling weight regain from a new and different angle.
When you receive weight loss treatment from WALOS, you are closely supported by an entire team of dedicated and skilled professionals who are there to help and educate you for the duration of your journey. It’s an approach that has worked wonders for our patients and we are always monitoring results and looking for ways to improve our services. We are committed to helping you end your struggle with weight loss.
What Is Sleeve Gastrectomy Surgery?
Sleeve gastrectomy surgery involves the removal of a section of the lower stomach that restricts the amount of food that can be eaten. It also effects the production of the hormone that controls hunger impulses, known as ghrelin. This helps immensely when a patient is trying to lose weight as it decreases not only the amount that they consume, but also suppresses their desire to do so. During sleeve gastrectomy surgery, some small incisions will be made into the abdomen after which specialised surgical tools and a camera will be used to perform the procedure.
What Are the Benefits of Sleeve Gastrectomy Surgery?
Sleeve gastrectomy allows normal digestion and function of the stomach. Sleeve gastrectomy patients eat and digest food normally, but in much smaller amounts as they feel full quickly and desire food less due to the decrease size of the stomach and a decrease in ghrelin, the hunger hormone.
Sleeve Gastrectomy Surgery Recovery
The recovery from sleeve gastrectomy surgery differs from each patient to the next, but you can rest assured that we will be with you every step of the way to ensure your complete comfort. You will be provided with all the medication and care needed to get you back to your best as soon as possible.
It is extremely important to stay hydrated so make sure you have plenty of fluids. It may seem strange, but walking is very beneficial to the healing process; however patients are encouraged to stay away from any heavy lifting or other exertions. You are usually allowed to return to work two to four weeks after your surgery and be back to their best in about four weeks.
