What bariatric surgery procedure options are available?

Home / News & Articles / What bariatric surgery procedure options are available?

There are many different types of surgery that are available to those wanting to lose weight.

When it comes to deciding between your weight loss surgery options, there are so many things to consider, and it can be difficult to know what the best option is. Whilst there are a lot of benefits to various weight loss procedures, any procedure you may want to undertake will require consultation with a bariatric surgeon, who will be able to provide you with the answer you are after. However, various options are available for those deemed eligible for weight loss surgery. Read on to discover more about them.

The benefits of bariatric surgery

Bariatric surgery, when combined with a healthier lifestyle, can have a profound effect on one’s health. If one is willing to make the changes required to live a healthier lifestyle (such as better exercise habits and a healthier diet) in conjunction with any surgery that is performed, it can result in a lot of weight loss.

This will result in a lower body mass index (BMI) along with reduced chances of suffering from type 2 diabetes, which is more likely to affect people with higher BMI scores.

The cons of weight loss surgery

Whilst it can be the catalyst behind the life-altering change, bariatric surgery should be treated as a last resort for those trying to get rid of any excess weight.

This is because all surgical procedures carry risks and require downtime. Furthermore, some procedures are irreversible, and others require further surgical intervention to reverse.

The gastric sleeve procedure

A gastric sleeve, also known as a sleeve gastrectomy, is a procedure that involves the removal of a portion of the stomach, leaving a banana-shaped pouch in its place which is closed with a stapling device. This procedure is an irreversible one, so one must be committed to living a healthy lifestyle.

Gastric bypass surgery

There are various forms of gastric bypass surgery which are available to you. Each procedure, whilst being similar, has various nuances which mean that they differentiate from one another. Some gastric bypass surgeries are used in conjunction with other procedures.

Gastric bypass procedures involve the creation of a pouch within the stomach that is directly connected to the small intestine.

Gastric band

This surgery involves having a silicone band inserted around your stomach which aims to decrease the amount of food intake you can have. This laparoscopic keyhole surgery aims to fit a removable device that aims to keep digestion as natural as possible.

This type of procedure, however, has fallen out of favour due to the complications which are associated with it. Most gastric band patients require some sort of follow up surgery either for band removal or adjustment, and some may not see the expected level of weight loss if the band is not tight enough.

Duodenal Switch

This procedure combines elements of gastric bypass and gastric sleeve surgeries to create a more rapid weight loss result. A portion of the stomach is removed and a bypass to the small intestine is created.

It can often be used in conjunction with other types of bariatric surgery.

Weight loss surgery combinations

In some cases, different bariatric surgery techniques are used at once to provide the best results for patients. This varies on a case-by-case basis.

Consulting a weight loss doctor

The first step towards any obesity surgery is to consult a weight loss doctor. They are in the best position to direct you towards the solution which will give you the best results.
