Frequently Asked Questions

Bariatric surgery is a life changing procedure and you will experience some changes and side effects post-op. These include feeling tired and weak as your body recovers from anaesthesia, adjusts to less food intake and not eating solids for the first few weeks post-op. You might lose muscle mass, experience hair loss, constipation and gallstones. You will stay in the hospital for up to 3 days and be closely monitored to make sure there are no serious complications. The changes will be a bit of an adjustment, but they are manageable, and your surgeon and dietician will prepare you for them.

Up to 6 weeks, depending on your health, age, and recovery after the operation. In the first few weeks following bariatric surgery, it’s important not to put any strain on your body, especially your abdominal area. You might also feel weak from the reduction in your food intake. So, for that time, you can’t do strenuous exercise, lift weights or anything else that would be too taxing on your body. Slowly, you can start taking walks, and other light forms of movement. It’s important to rest your body so that it adjusts and follow doctor’s orders.

No, for the first few weeks you won’t be allowed to eat solid foods. Different foods will be introduced at certain stages, based on how you’re recovering. First, you can only clear broths, then you move to thicker soups, then mashes and purées over the next few weeks until you can have solid foods again. This should take about 4-6 weeks, which will be decided by your surgeon and your dietician. The way your body handles food after bariatric surgery will change and the way you eat has to change too, so it’s important that solid food is reintroduced slowly.

We also work with SuperCare, who can help to facilitate funding for most bariatric procedures, including sleeve gastrectomy, gastric bypass and SIPS procedures, as well as after care treatment and programs. Please don’t hesitate to get in touch if you would like to find out more about our payment and finance plans.
