Bariatric surgery is a successful tool for combating obesity and weight gain.
However, some patients may need a secondary, or revisionary, procedure. If you are having trouble with your original weight loss surgery or are struggling with weight regain, a revisionary procedure could be an appropriate option for you.
Successful Weight Loss Procedures
Dr Dolan’s experience of revision procedures will help you decide whether further surgery is appropriate and which type of surgery would benefit you best. Dr Dolan has performed over 15 years worth of weight loss procedures, many of them being revision procedures.
What is involved in Revisionary Weight Loss Surgery?
A revision or second procedure will depend on the specific needs and health problems of the patient, but options include sleeve gastrectomy, mini gastric bypass and single anastomosis duodeno–ileal bypass with sleeve gastrectomy (SADI-S), a new procedure which combines sleeve gastrectomy and gastric bypass. Dr Dolan will discuss potential treatments with the patient and help them decide the surgical approach best suited to their circumstances.
Preparing for Revisionary Weight Loss Surgery
Preparations for surgery will depend on the exact surgery needed. Dr Dolan will go over specific instructions, but generally, patients will need to:
- Avoid eating after midnight, the day before surgery
- Optifast for two weeks prior to surgery
What to Expect After Revisionary Weight Loss Surgery
Postoperative procedures and instructions will vary depending on the surgery. Typically patients should also expect to return to a post-gastric surgery diet of liquids for two weeks and pureed foods for two weeks.
